Pokémon Birthday Party Guide: Decorations, Cake, Games & Favours All in One

Pokémon is the evergreen number-one theme for Hong Kong kids. How do you style a Pikachu backdrop? Where to order a Poké Ball cake? How does a "Gotta Catch 'Em All" treasure hunt work? From a real party (Clayton's Pokémon 5th birthday), here is the full plan: colours, cake, games, dress code and favours.

Pokémon Birthday Party Guide: Decorations, Cake, Games & Favours All in One

If one birthday theme is recognised across every generation, it is Pokémon — kids talk about it daily, and their parents grew up with Pikachu themselves. Clayton's recent 5th birthday was a textbook Pokémon party: a giant Pikachu backdrop, a "Gotta Catch 'Em All" banner, a Pokémon cake and a magic show, the whole venue glowing yellow from start to finish. Using that party as the blueprint, here is the complete Pokémon theme plan.

1. Colours and backdrop: yellow, blue and red set the tone

Pokémon's visual code is crystal clear: Pikachu yellow as the main colour, accented by the red and white of Poké Balls and Squirtle's powder blue. Centre the backdrop on a large Pikachu, scatter Poké Balls, lightning bolts and favourite supporting characters (Eevee, Charmander, Squirtle), and add the birthday child's name and age — Clayton's "Gotta catch 'em all!" banner beside a number-5 balloon shows exactly how it's done. Baby E Playhouse's cartoon theme backdrops can be customised with characters and names, and decoration is included in the venue fee.

2. The Pokémon cake and dessert table

  • Poké Ball cake — the red-and-white hemisphere with a centre button; instantly recognisable and dramatic to cut.
  • 3D character cake — fondant Pikachu or Eevee standing on top, with the birthday child's name plaque.
  • Dessert table extensions — Poké Ball cupcakes, lightning-bolt cookies and yellow macarons keep the whole table on-palette.

Our partner cake makers handle it all in one order, matched to the backdrop — Clayton's Pokémon cake came from exactly this crew.

3. Games: Gotta Catch 'Em All!

  • Pokémon treasure hunt — hide plush Pokémon around the venue; children "catch" them with red-and-white balls and win prizes for a full set. Simple rules that work from 2 to 8.
  • Pikachu musical statues — play the theme song; freeze in a Pikachu pose when it stops.
  • Pin the tail, Pokémon edition — blindfolded, pin the lightning tail on Pikachu; closest wins.

More game ideas and hosting tips in our party games guide; for a hired-show climax, a magician is the classic Pokémon-party partner — Clayton's magic segment had the whole room screaming.

4. Dress code and face painting

The Pokémon dress code could not be easier: guests in yellow already qualify, while the birthday child wears a Pikachu hoodie or trainer outfit; a face painter turns young guests into Pikachu with one lightning-bolt stroke. For the full-family version, see our dress code guide.

5. Favours: take a Poké Ball home

Poké Ball chocolates, Pokémon sticker books, trading-card packs and Pikachu hand towels — HK$10–30 each is plenty, handed out by the birthday child at the door. Budgets and pitfalls in our return gift guide.

6. The real thing: Clayton's Pokémon 5th birthday

On the day, Clayton — in Pikachu gear with a lightning face paint — blew out his candles before a giant Pikachu backdrop, with a magic show, a mountain of presents and a room full of Pokémon-painted young guests turning the 3,000 sq ft venue into a true trainer's world (see the gallery below). That same period, the venue also hosted a Miffy-themed 1st birthday with zhua zhou (Emilia) — proof of what we always say: whatever the age, we prepare everything.

FAQ

Do I need to prepare the Pokémon backdrop myself?

No. Baby E Playhouse's 55+ backdrops cover cartoon themes, and a Pokémon scene can be customised with the birthday child's name and age (a giant Pikachu, Poké Balls and a "Gotta Catch 'Em All" banner, for example). Decoration is included in the venue fee, with installation and removal handled for you.

Where can I order a Pokémon cake?

Our partner cake makers create custom Pokémon cakes — Poké Ball designs, 3D Pikachu toppers, Eevee and Squirtle supporting characters — matched to the dessert table's colour scheme. Arrange it all through one WhatsApp message (9606 5967) instead of price-shopping bakery by bakery.

What age suits a Pokémon theme?

Ages 4–8 are peak obsession, boys and girls alike. Because Pokémon spans generations, many parents are fans themselves and even grandparents recognise Pikachu — guest engagement across mixed ages is among the highest of any theme.
